Africa's Milled Rice Market Set to Reach 64 Million Tons and $44.1 Billion by 2035 

Market Forecast Driven by increasing demand for milled rice in Africa, the market is expected to continue an upward consumption trend over the next decade. Market performance is forecast to decelerate, expanding with an anticipated CAGR of +1.2% for the period from 2024 to 2035, which is projected to bring the market volume to 64M tons by the end of 2035. 

Consumption Africa's 

Consumption of Milled Rice After three years of growth, consumption of milled rice decreased by -2.1% to 56M tons in 2024. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2013 to 2024; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 8.2%. The volume of consumption peaked at 57M tons in 2023, and then declined slightly in the following year. 

Consumption By Country 

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2024 were Nigeria (8.7M tons), Madagascar (5.6M tons) and Egypt (5M tons), with a combined 34% share of total consumption. Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Senegal, Tanzania, Benin and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%. From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +7.7%), while consumption for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth. 

Production 

Africa's Production of Milled Rice In 2024, after six years of growth, there was decline in production of milled rice, when its volume decreased by -4% to 40M tons. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2023 with an increase of 8.7%. As a result, production attained the peak volume of 42M tons, and then declined modestly in the following year. 

Imports 

Africa's Imports of Milled Rice In 2024, approx. 17M tons of milled rice were imported in Africa; increasing by 2.4% against 2023 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at 18M tons in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Import Prices By Country 

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($567 per ton), while Burkina Faso ($158 per ton) was amongst the lowest. From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
