Kaohsiung, Taiwan — In a significant milestone for Taiwan’s agricultural exports, over 5,400 packages of Kaohsiung 147 rice, a premium local japonica variety, have been exported to South Africa. The announcement was made by the Kaohsiung City Agriculture Bureau on Monday, marking the first-ever shipment of Taiwanese rice to the South African market.
📦 The rice is packaged in 3-kg bags and is part of a strategic initiative to expand Taiwan’s rice footprint globally, particularly in emerging markets.
🌱 The Meinong District Farmers’ Association, which holds plant breeders’ rights and authorization since 2012, has allocated 500 hectares specifically for cultivating the Kaohsiung 147 variety. The association has also trademarked the rice and invested in brand development to ensure international recognition.
🗣️ Association Secretary General Chung Ching-hui (鍾清輝) credited the Taiwanese government’s support for the rice’s export success. Strategic planning, branding efforts, and programs designed to ensure stable farmer incomes have all contributed to this achievement.
🌾 Meinong District, located in southern Taiwan, is now regarded as the region’s leading rice production hub. Yao Chih-wang (姚志旺), Director of the Kaohsiung City Agriculture Bureau, highlighted the government's backing through a 50% subsidy on crop insurance premiums — the highest subsidy offered by any county or city in Taiwan.
🌍 Yao emphasized that this export effort is more than just a commercial milestone. It symbolizes Taiwan’s commitment to promoting its rice culture and agricultural excellence on the global stage, with South Africa becoming a promising new market.
